“Hal,” she sighed, tugging the pillow that he’d pulled over the top of his head away from him. He made a muffled sound of dissatisfaction when it was taken from him and immediately made a blind reach for the other one that was still in arm’s length of him. He quickly pulled it to him and the messy head of brown hair that she’d been staring at disappeared underneath the silver colored cushion.

She grabbed that one from him as well and tossed it down with the other one that she’d taken from him. He made the same grumbling sound once more limply let his arms flop down onto the mattress. Shaking her head at him, Laira poked at his exposed side with her fingers and bit her bottom lip to keep from smiling when he jerked away from the prodding.

“You must get up,” she told him, letting one of her knees settle on the mattress next to him before swinging her other leg over him so that she was seated on his back. “Do not make me drag you.”

He laughed at her threat, the action lightly jostling her. His head turned to the side from where it had been face down so that he was staring back at her. “The only thing you’re making me want to do, Princess, is stay right where I am.”

“I am not explaining to my mother why there is a half naked human male in my bed.”

“Straddling a half naked man in your bed is a better alternative to explain?”

Hal.

“I’m just saying,” he laughed as he began to turn, grabbing hold of her arm to keep from throwing her completely from her seat. “Seems like this would be the more awkward thing to explain.”

“Remove yourself from my bed and there will be nothing to explain.”

He gave her a grin and lightly squeezed her hips, “Gotta get off me first, Princess.” She gave him a look he wasn’t quite sure what to make of and then dug her fingers into both of his sides, making him yelp and squirm in return.

“You are incredibly lucky that I am so fond of you.”

Laira had welcomed the company while she was watching over Hal’s dog. He was gone for the weekend due to work, leaving Laira with nothing to really do in terms of entertainment. When she’d run into Nightingale while taking Bijou for one final walk in the late evening, she’d felt guilty about leaving her on her own. While the girl hadn’t come out and directly stated it, Laira didn’t think she had a place to stay for the night. If the amount of traveling that the she did was any indication, Laira would not doubt it.

They had talked for a little while longer after they had returned to where Laira was staying before Nightingale had reached the point where she simply could no longer keep her eyes open and drifted off to sleep. Laira left her be, making sure to cover her with the light blanket from the back of the sofa before retiring to sleep herself.

The next morning, she found the girl where she’d left her, curled up on the couch with the blanket pulled tight around her. Leaning over the back of the sofa, she gently shook her girl’s shoulder. “There is fruit and breakfast pastries if you are hungry.”

It wasn’t necessarily a common occurrence, not like Jordan and his tendency to nap after training. But, occasionally, he did nod off in the middle of research. The archives were quiet and very few Lanterns tended to visit there. Why, Laira never really understood. It was one of her favorites places to venture to when she was on Oa.

He wasn’t sleeping hard, at least she didn’t think he was. He was simply reclined back somewhat in the chair with his arms folded neatly over his chest. Sinestro had never really seemed like the type of individual that would be a particularly hard sleeper. Thus, she never really saw a reason to jostle him awake.

Instead she reached and rested a hand on his shoulder, applying only the slightest amount of pressure with her fingers. “If you continue doing this, I may have no choice but to become concerned about your overall health.”

It wasn’t the first time he’d fallen asleep after sparring. In fact, it was easier to remember the times when he had not versus when he had. It truly was remarkable how easily it seemed to occur as well. She’d only turned her back on him for a few moments to discuss a matter with Kilowog. When she’d turned back to him, he was propped up against the wall behind her, arms folded and chin tucked to his chest.

She bent, hands braced against her knees, and watched him for a moment before reaching out and giving his forehead a hard thump with one of her fingers. “You are lucky Sinestro was not the one who caught you doing this.”

Meeting #1
—————

“What’s the name of the pretty redhead in the corner?”

Her ears and her interest perk when she hears the question. She’s been occupying herself with mulling over documents concerning trade options with planets in her home system, but her attention shifts easily enough away from that. It’s a boring and rather tedious task, but a required one. Her eyes briefly leave the pad that displays the data for her and she looks across the bar to where the voices are coming from. Kilowog is there along with Hal and another Lantern that she’s never seen before. He looks human and she’s heard talk of there being another Green Lantern from Earth. She continues listening as they talk amongst themselves, seemingly unaware that she’s overheard them.

“Laira?” Jade asks, unable to believe the fact Laira was really there, even if she had suspected it was possible; it was hard to process seeing someone alive and well when you everyone thought they were dead.

As Jade stares back, Laira expects the other girl to be angry and she felt she would deserve such rage. However, Jade surprises her by rushing forward and hugging her instead.

“We thought you were dead. We had a funeral and-I-I-” Jade began before her tears drowned out her words. Laira’s shoulders sagged in defeat before wrapping one arm around Jade while the other smoothed her hair as the girl shook. For the moment, Laira’s will to do what she came for was completely drained as she comforted the other girl.

“I’m truly sorry. Words cannot describe how much it pained me to do that.” Laira whispered as Jade seemed to slowly calm down. “It was a difficult decision but it had to be done.”

“But you’re okay.” Jade said, finally looking up. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”

At that, Laira was silent, her lips pressed into a thin line that made Jade’s brow furrow in confusion.

Why couldn’t she have just been angry?

“Jade, I really am sorry.” She said, reaching for her black power disc.

“Laira? What are you doing?!” Jade asked, struggling as Laira’s hold on her tightened and the disc glowed with a violet light. In a few moments, Jade went limp in her arms as she went unconscious. For an instant, Laira wondered if the disc went too far before she felt Jade’s heart beat as she picked her up and walked over to the bed. She slowly tucked Jade into bed and studied her face. Jade looked peaceful as she slept, all traces of the shock and betrayal that had lined her face before were gone.

“You have people who care for you, Jade. People who can be there for you so much more than I ever could be.” Laira whispered, brushing Jade’s hair from her face. “You always deserved so much better than me.”

At that point, Laira wasn’t sure if she was saying it because she believed it or she was trying to convince herself.

However, there was no turning back now. She had a duty to the Corpse and to the universe. If in the long run the universe was safer for all those she cared for, this would all be worth it.

Drabble request previews

I bet you guys thought I’d forgotten about these. I haven’t, I promise. I know that I’ve been scarce the last couple of weeks, but if you guys didn’t know I started my last semester of college before I begin grad school in the spring last Monday, so things have been a bit hectic. I’m still trying to get back into my routine of things and get my time divided properly. All of these are extremely short, simply because I don’t want to give away too much. There are a couple of users whose previews didn’t make it into here because they are still outlines. But I am working on them when I’m able to (as well as trying to get caught up on my prose threads with a couple of other users).

“She is tiny.” Artemis said, watching the girl wading in the surf near the shoreline.

“She still very young.” Laira replied. “She has also never left the labs where she was created before now. She didn’t even know what the ocean was.” Artemis was silent but Laira could see that it bothered her more than she would admit.

“Man’s World.” Artemis scoffed under her breath as she left Laira’s side and approached the girl. When she got closer, the small girl turned around in surprise, her hands behind her back. “Do you know who I am, girl?”

“Artemis. Laira told me about you.” The girl said not looking at Artemis directly.

“Did Laira give you any reason to be fearful of me?”

“No.”

“Then you can look me in the eye when I speak with you.” Artemis said before noticing the girl still looked scared as she looked up. She let out a sigh, before kneeling down to be eye level with the small girl. “You have no reason to fear me. It is my nature to be blunt with my words but it is because I value when people are direct and to the point. I hope you never feel as though there is something you can’t come to me with.”

“Okay.” Jade said, shuffling her feet before bringing her hands in front of her and held out a sea shell. “What’s this?” Artemis’s lips hinted at a smile, remembering Alexa used to collect and catalog various sea shells.

“It’s a sea shell.” Artemis said. “At the house, there is a large collection of them. I can tell you about all of them when we go back.”

When she saw the girl’s eyes light up, Artemis knew she had done something right.

jadedfrost:

“You are free visit anywhere as long as you are a guest with us, within reason of course.” Artemis said as she lead Laira’s guest on a tour through the island. Another Lantern although apparently they used love instead of will. Artemis nearly scoffed as she thought about it. It sounds like something Diana would come up with but, as far as Artemis was concerned, love was not something for the battlefield.

“Your hospitality is appreciated.” Yrra said as her attention was caught by the women training grounds, which Artemis raised a brow at. “They’re very good.”

“They’re some of the best. We have a very proud tradition as warriors. We earn the right to follow in the path of our ancestors.” Artemis said, raising her chin with pride. “Would you like to try your hand against one of them?” Yrra’s lips twitched into a smile, as though she knew something Artemis didn’t.

“I’d be honored to.” Yrra replied and Artemis called for the field to be cleared before motioning over to one of the women. As Artemis and the girl talked, Yrra noted the girl was apparently named Jade and she seemed fairly young but if Amazons are a race of practically immortal warrior women it was hard to tell. As Artemis cleared the field, Yrra looked over the weapons before picking up a sword.

“Good choice.” Jade called out and Yrra looked up to study her opponent closely before smirking.

“Let’s see if you’re as good as I was lead to believe.” Yrra said before moving forward and she was surprised by the other woman’s agility as she dodged forcing Yrra to spin around abruptly to block. They quickly fell into a rhythm that could almost be mistaken for dancing if it wasn’t for the sounds of swords clanging against each other.

“I think Artemis underestimated you.” Jade said as they came in closer as their blades met.

“Perhaps, you however-” Yrra stopped as she noticed the crown in Jade’s hair. She knew it was Jaydian. “You’re-“

“What is going on here?” Laira’s voice cut through the air as she landed and Artemis’s eyes widen slightly as she reached for her weapon.

“I thought she was the Star Sapphire you were expecting.” Artemis said as she gave a withering glare towards Yrra and it was clear she was ready to attack.

“Miri Riam is busy elsewhere but Yrra is also a trusted ally and skilled warrior in her own right. So I’d prefer you to not pit her against our daughter to prove a point.”

“I can handle myself.” Jade said, rolling her eyes but a smile crept in as well. Laira was having none of it however.

“Jade, I brought some things from my trip. I want you to talk a look.” Laira said and Jade looked towards Yrra and shrugged.

“I hope we can see more of each other before you leave.” Jade said to Yrra before leaving the arena. Yrra tilted her head and caught herself admiring the other woman leave before she felt Laira’s and Artemis’s disapproving glares.
